Why learn to draw?

Drawing is kind of like writing. It is a simple, shorthand method for showing our thoughts to other people. With some guidance and a good bit of practice, we can become capable at drawing, just like with writing. Drawing is not just for artists any more than writing is just for novelists. It is a craft anyone can follow and use to supplement other skill sets and inform other areas of knowledge.

Just like writing, drawing is a fast way to convey ideas on a two-dimensional surface. Also, taking the time to do a careful drawing is a great way to get a better understanding of something’s structure, whether it be a tree, a building, or an engine. With some guidance on the basics, and some disciplined practice over the course of a few months to a year, anyone can gain a great deal of useful competence.
